28mm African Civilian Sailors

by Steve Winter

John McEwan continued his policy of catering to my unspoken desires (how does he do that?) by releasing this set of five figures. They’re African civilian sailors, suitable for use as the deck crew of any small vessel in African service, be it a French river patrol, a British or German gunboat on the lakes, or a merchant steamer plying the coast. Each of the five figures is a unique pose: two firemen with shovels, two deck crew with rifles, and one engineer with a wrench. All wear full-length trousers and are barefoot, and three of the five are bare-chested. They range from 26 to 28M on the Barrett scale. Minimal flash was easily removed. They are nicely proportioned and posed.

There’s not a lot of surface detail on these simply equipped figures (the engineer wears a cross on a chain round his neck), but the musculature on their bare backs, chests, and arms is all anatomically correct and distinct. The shovel handles are quite thin and bendy, which may explain why one of my shovel blades wasn’t entirely filled in with metal during molding. One particularly nice touch is that the rounded bases are molded with a wood slat texture to blend with a ship’s deck. All in all, a very nice set of useful, Darkest Africa-type figures that no one else offers. Pack of 5 figures/$6; available from Reviresco, 435 Chenault St., Hoquiam, WA, 98550; online store at www.tin-soldier.com.
