Gripping Beast

25mm Ancients

by John Boehm

Gripping Beast makes an extensive range of larger 25 mm dark ages and ancient figures. Received for review were two packs from their Caesar’s Legions range, which includes CL 20, kneeling armored legionnaires in Coolus helmet with sword at the ready, and CL 27 unarmored legionnaires in Monteforino helmet advancing with sword. Figures are 28 M on the Barrett scale, and come eight to a pack with separate shields and swords or pila, as the case may be. The unarmored figures are nicely posed with a full sized scutum. Likewise, the kneeling legionnaires in mail armor are interesting and have a scutum that has been shortened by having the top and bottom cut down. The figures are well detailed with virtually no flash. The separate weapons and shields look easy to attach. The bases on the figures are both thinly cast and of minimal size for each figure. There are ten different poses available for each variant of armor and helmet as well as separate command sets. I found the unarmored legionnaires to be quite interesting and they will provide some interesting variations for Late Republic and Roman Civil Wars armies. Each pack of eight figures sells for $12.00. Also received for review was a Byzantine light cavalryman, BZC6, listed as a Kavallarioi with couch lance. He is equipped with an oval shield and a lance that is separately cast. The mounted figure would appear to be a little larger than the Roman infantrymen if he were standing straight up. The horse appears rather smallish compared to the rider but overall is a nicely posed charging horse. The cavalry figures are sold individually for $3.00. These exceptional and highly recommended figures are available from RLBPS, 4827 Treeview Terrance, Rockford, IL 61109; 815-874-5351; www.rlbps.com.
