The Grate and Famous
Battel of Lutzen

Reprint of the 1633 Publication

by Terry Gore

This 30-page exact copy of a 370 year-old manuscript describes the campaign and battle of Lutzen in the Thirty Year’s War between Gustavus Adolphus’ Swedish army and the Imperial army under Wallenstein. You cannot get much closer to contemporary sources than this. Though the use of text of the times is a bit difficult to read, the booklet is lively and gives a decent, nearly ‘first-hand’ account of the action. Such as this: “...five Cannon shot discharged upon the Enemy, who answered them with two hundred, which went off with a horrid noise, and lightning...” (pg. 9). This type of publication is always interesting and we owe Gareth a round of applause for bringing them out of the dusty shelves and reprinting them. fROM Gareth Simon of Pallas, Armata, 98 Priory Rd., Tonbridge, Kent TN9 2BP, U.K.
