Column Line Square

3rd Edition Napoleonic Rules

Review By Dick Bryant

It was a real surprise to receive the review copy of these revered set of rules, rules that many of we “Old Guard” were weaned on. There are some major changes in this edition, changes that eliminate some of the time-worn but affectionately remembered aspect of the rules; artillery sticks, burst circles and howitzer patterns, written orders and simultaneous move are all gone!

The basic rules are all there in 36 succinct pages updated by the writing team to integrate all the various “Revised Referee Rulings” and breathlessly awaited responses from Fred Vietmeyer to our (often) sophomoric questions. While the basic rules are there, many will have to read very carefully as there are major changes in cavalry against squares (Cavalry only gets one shot!); Only British Highlanders add 1 to morale; and a flank melee attack requires the victim to roll for morale every turn!

I see only one shortcoming, if the authors would like to see the rules used by the “next generation” of gamers and that is a much more detailed organizational chart as an appendix. Bob Piepenbrink and Dana Homo led the writing effort supported by many that helped grow the rules through many games with Fred. The memorable drawings from the first edition by Ted Haskell are there also. To show how much these rules have been “modernized”, there is now a “Gyp Sheet” included!

Available for only $5 from Dana Homo, 20399 State Road, 120; Bristol, IN 46507.
