Captain General

Rules for 1660-1721

Review By Dick Bryant

The Pike and Shot Society have published their long-awaited ruleset. Written by Tom Smith, they are a comprehensive set of rules for 15mm figures with modifications for 6-10mm figures and for 25mm figures. Ground scale is 20 yards = 1 centimeter. Units on the table represent infantry battalions artillery batteries, and regiments of horse. Each unit has from 2 - 6 stands with 2 to 6 figures on each stand depending on troop type.

There are extensive Command and Control orders that replicate the difficulties of command during the period. The written orders are specified as to what they can be and under what circumstances that go a long way to avoiding the usual arguments that can arise from such. The game sequence is then Officer Replacement and returns; Command Phase; Declare Charges & Counter Charges; Fire: Melee; test for Office Casualties; and finally, Morale.

I haven’t tried these as yet but the comprehensive nature of the rules and the clarity of the writing based on several reads suggest a fun, very playable set of rules.
