Agincourt

Medieval book

review by Tom Desmond

By Christopher Hibbert

Published by Windrush Press and part of the Great Battles Series, Agincourt is a short but detailed account of the 13th century campaign by Henry V. The book covers the early exchanges between the newly crowned Henry and the French, the expedition to France and the subsequent battle. The level of detail includes lengthy descriptions of the entourage that accompanied Henry, the armor and weapons involved and the siege of Harfleur that initiated the campaign. The author describes the maneuvering that followed the fall of Harfleur as Henry marched across the French countryside. The account of the battle has a lot of information useful to wargamers such as to tactics and formations used by both armies and comments on the outcome. There are a number of black and white period illustrations and one very detailed map of the battlefield. The book is well indexed and contains a number of sources for further reading. I found the book to be a very readable introduction to the period and the battle that would pique your interest for further research. Recommended.
