Napoleonique Encore:

A Miniature Wargame of Strategic,
Tactical Maneuver in the Napoleonic Era

review by Jim Birdseye

Developed and written by Jim Getz with Duke Seifried, Encore written by Glenn Davis. The original Napoleonique was published in 1971, a mere twenty years later the improved version with attachments bursts on the scene and reminds us that we have not gone as far as we hoped in twenty years. Although more than 22,000 copies of the original were sold and perhaps another 10,000 xeroxed very few new wargamers have had the opportunity to play or own a copy of a piece of wargaming history. The softback rule book includes some 63 slick pages of text and five pages of charts, plus illustrations and ads. This is a chart driven set of rules which has its pluses and minuses. (If you already got a copy contact the authors for the three tables that were missed when printing took place. They are included in later issues.)

The rules use the standard system and sequencing that is favored by most later sets of rules, orders writing, movement, artillery fire (big guns first), small arms fire, melees and breakthrough moves. The last 13 pages are devoted to Encore which is a complete concept in itself. The rules are workable and reasonable. Mounting is not a major problem as long as both sides are set up on the same mounting scheme. The scale is 1/30 but since the authors recommend using under strength units a set up for 1/60 is not unreasonable if the units were full strength 1/60's they would equal half strength 1/30's. I can recommend this set of rides for more reasons than the fact that they represent a piece of our common heritage. Butthat in and of itself should be recommendation enough.
