Strange American Conflicts

The Toledo War

by Rudy Scott Nelson

This is a WHAT IF situation since the dispute was settled without a skirmish. The State of Ohio and the Territory of Michigan both claimed the Toledo Stripe which lay along their border. Both governements sent troops into the area in 1835. WHAT IF the US Federal government had refused to negotiate between the two. They gave Michigan most of the Upper Peninsula in exchange for dropping their Toledo claim.

A mixture of War of 1812, Alamo to Mexican American War castings could be used. As well as British India (Afgan War) castings if a Canadian intervention campaign is conducted. Scenario: Toledo 1835. For a single battle scenario, place several buildings as a town (Toledo) or scattered them. Designate key terrain objectives and a maximum casualty level for a force morale breakpoint. Forces on both sides should be equal with mostly foot, few mounted and no artillery.

Federal Intervention Scenario. Michigan militia (up to 100) holds the key terrain features on the board. A column of Ohio Militia (up to 100) enters from one boardedge. A column Federal troops (30-40 foot + 10-15 cavalry + one or two guns) enters on another edge.

British Canada Intervention Scenario. Utilize an advance to contact format. Enter the Ohio-US side as above. Enter the Michigan and their British Ally (same forces as the US Federals) from other edges. So each command will be entering on a different boardedge.

Control of terrain and forces remaining on board in good combat morale are the keys to victory.
