As you will remember, Lothar-Gunther Buchheim is the author of the book, then the film, 'DAS BOOT'. He has very few friends among the U- Boat veterans. Apparently he has quite an archive of photos and drawings, and is looking for a home for it. An article appears some time ago under the headline of Suddenly, Everyone Wants the Buchheim Collection Already the day after the negative vote on the Buchheim Museum in Feldafing (Bavaria), the search for a new location is proceeding. While the collector, author and painter L-G Buchheim is still licking his wounds, interested inquiries are sent from the Munchen city authorities. They still want this museum in Bavaria even though the vote by the citizens was nearly 62% against it. The Minister of the area Stoiber said offers have been received from Berchdesgaden, Murnau and Garmisch Partenkirchen, and that Feldafing does not speak for all of Bavaria. Why did Feldafing turn thumbs down on the museum? Anti-museum citizens stated in the article: 'The animosities of the citizens against one of their own unloved citizens caused the vote'. The article goes on to state that 'It was in the end, unthoughtful comments made by Buchheim, which provoked the already negative feelings toward the project, to completely cancel it. His comments that every gully rat that has not seen a museum is deciding about the cultural standing of Feldafing. His collection is valued at more than $100 million US, so it will probably find a home somewhere. When the vote was finished, his comments were: "I am upset. There was lying and cheating, falsification and altering of the facts. There have been a flood of insults directed toward me. Coarse egotism in accordance to the Flotian principle."
