While sailing around his native Puerto Rico a few years ago, JOSE PEREZ NEVAREZ (2337-C/ILEFE-1992) had an experience which we quote here in his own words: "One day a few years back, my wife and I were cruising around Isla de Cabanas (Goat Island). There were nothing but goats there a few years back. Now you can find excellent and expensive seafood and a shooting range for the Puerto Rican police at the tip of the peninsula. That is what it is today. As I looked towards the harbor, I noticed something sticking out of the water. I stopped, and sure enough it was a huge submarine. Next day, there it was - the picture in the paper with the caption: 'U.S. Nuclear Submarine Makes it to San Juan - Submerged' The San Juan Harbor is narrow, shallow and the undercurrent is very strong to the point that quite a few huge surface vessels have run aground. But the sub was not heading for the harbor, but for Roosevelt Roads which is a naval complex on the eastern tip of Puerto Rico. By the way, we refer to it as 'Base de Crib' in reference to the nearest town named after a huge tree. The sub had also run aground, which made it all the more dangerous." More Bulletin Board
