The armies of Greece from the late Mycenaean period to the first appearance of hoplite warfare (most splendidly written about by V.D. Hanson in his Western Way of War) provide an interesting variant. This period would see the founding of the city of Sparta, along with the various other small, independent Greek city-states. The dynamic of many of these Greek city-states was coloniztion, allowing for military proficiency as well as developing into naval powers. The lance (spear) armed charioteers, supported by cavalry, skirmishers and led by heroes are augmented by spearmen, preferably LAI). This army can fight in any terrain and can sail up water features as well. Flank sweeps by the chariots, supported by cavalry and screened by skirmishers with the close order foot moving forward in the centre should give the opponent problems. This is a fair to good army for any level of player. Enemies: Hittites, Trojan War and Post Mycenean Greek. More Chariot Armies For Ancient Warfare
