Reviews by "Old Duffer"
Chatham (Tracy, Gardiner, Lyon, and Morriss) Another in this well-illustrated series on the Royal Navy that uses a number of chronological and thematic essays to deal with (in this case) the wars for American Independence. The book is divided into four sections; the first years (1775-77), the Americas and West Indies to 1783, Europe to 1783, and the East Indies to 1783. This structure results in the campaigns in America filling less than half of the book, an accurate reflection of the Royal Navy's view. There are excellent essays on such matters as which ships were best suited for colonial warfare, the French, Spanish and Dutch navies, the advantages of copper sheathing and the cruises of Suffren. At times the various actions were confusing without diagrams, and the strategic situation could have benefited from maps, but these are small criticisms of an excellent book.
