Digby Smith for Windrush The Artist Formerly Known As Otto Von Pivka produces a rather good account of Borodino. If not as great of that of the Great One (Doctor Duffy, of whom God Preserve, of Sandhurst) it is not far behind. Lots of maps and lots of reminiscences from both sides that all add to the value of the piece. In some cases a French memoir will be followed by a Russian one of the same event. This book makes you want to reach for a good game on Borodino and get the feel of reserves being pulled back and forwards seeking to cover the holes torn by artillery, charge and assault. Digby Smith is not much persuaded by le Tondu and gives him a good deal of lip about his foolish handling of the campaign. I cannot say one could disagree with him. Occasionally the text could do with an editor, the last paragraph is (for example) rushed. A terrible battle, well recounted, now thanks be given that the impossible Scotty Bowden did not visit the field. More Old Duffer's Book Corner (book reviews)
