Jason Goodwin for Vintage This is a history of the Ottoman Empire that sits carefully between narrative history and a "Wondrous Curisosities" book. As such it is full of clever ways of looking at the commonplace. With its absence of nationalism (they served a family not a nation) the empire at times looks very modern and at others very ancient. Well written, and a pleasure to read. More Old Duffer's Book Corner (book reviews)
