Chatham Publishing This illustrated volume produced with the National Maritime Museum could have just been a very expensive coffee-table book. In fact it is a very useful collection of essays on the war with Revolutionary France. Despite the temptation, so pronounced in most books on the period, to go straight to the battles especially with the rich illustrative sources this book gives a very strategic review of an early World War. Divided into four sections the authors review the actions in home waters from 1793 to 1796; the war against trade (including Africa and the East and West Indies); the Mediterranean theatre; and, finally, Ireland the Channel from 1795-1797. Britain came perilously close to defeat a number of times in this period. This book will get you up to speed as to why without you knowing anything about a larboard tack.
