The Anglo-Dutch Naval Wars

Hainsworth & Churches for Alan Sutton

This book is a competent history of the three wars, started in the period before Cromwell was Lord Protector and ending with a defeat for the forces of Stuart absolutism. The Wars ran from the Baltic to New Amsterdam, Bahia and the Spice Isles and saw the Navy (for Royal it was not always) facing a really tough opponent. For me the period is either of history of the battles (in which case Peter Padfield is your man) or a history of the campaigns (in which case J.R.Jones owns the franchise). Hainsworth & Churches sail between these two masters uneasily but without grounding on the Galloper.
