Editions Brokaw

Saxon-Polish Army During the Great War
and
Spanish Army of Philip V
(booklets)

Reviewed by Dan Grove

These two booklets are the latest publications from Editions Brokaw on the forces that fought in the Great Northern War and the War of the Spanish Succession. They are similar in format to the previous publications on other armies of the period. They are a welcome addition to the growing information available to gamers on this interesting period of history.

The one on the Saxon Polish Army is 17 pages long and covers the entire army including colors and standards for all arms. There are three pages of illustration of the colors and standards as well as many other illustrations by Pat Condray to show uniform appearance. They are in black and white.

Of the eleven sources used in the publication, only one is in English, and readily obtainable by the gamer. The other sources are hard to find foreign language publications which make this booklet a steal at its $3.00 price. Anyone gaming the period should not be without it.

The Spanish Army booklet is likewise a very good buy at $3.00. It is 26 pages long and is scattered with illustrations by Pat Condray of both uniforms as well as flags. There is information on the Spanish Tercios from before the War of The Spanish Succession, as well as their transition to regiments of foot. Eight charts are provided on uniform colors and the text contains data on individual elite formations, organization, arms and equipment. Again most of the Select Bibliography is hard to find foreign language sources. Highly recommended!

The Spanish Booklet is written by James Hinds, and the Saxon Polish one by Dan Schorr. Dan is well known for his booklet on Swedish flags of the great Northern War also available from Editions Brokaw. He has also authored several articles on the Swedish forces of the Seven Years War. Available from Editions Brokaw, 8234 Kings Arm Drive, Alexandria, VA 22308.
