Introduction to the
Age of Marlborough

(Booklet)

Reviewed by Ken Bunger

Pat Condray has compiled a revised Wargamer's Introduction to the Age of Marlborough. The 5 1/2 by 8 1/2" booklet is forty pages of single space type and many black and white line drawings.

Many so called guides or uniform books include a few fairly commonly known facts in an expensive looking cover. Condray continues to buck this trend by wrapping an incredible amount of detail in an inexpensive format. His scholarly research is supported by a good bibliography and a discussion of sources throughout the text. Pat won't win any awards as an artist, but his workable illustrations convey all the necessary information.

The booklet covers the uniforms, flags, organization and tactics of the armies of France, Austria and Britain. Even if you own his 1985 first edition, I strongly suggest you buy this booklet. Pat agrees in this edition that the British artillerymen wore crimson faced blue. My only criticism would be that his research on the French Artillery, while accurate, would be enhanced by reference to Susane's Histoire de l'artillerie Francaise.

Highly recommended. Available from Editions-Brokaw, , c/o Pat Condray, 8234 Kings Arm Drive, Alexandria, VA 22308. The price is $5.00.
