Connoisseur Figures

25mm Sudan Range

Reviewed by Lynn Bodin

Peter Gilder's long-awaited Colonial figures have finally be released. The first figures out are for the Sudan Wars and include British, Ansar, and Beja Tribesmen. The key word for this range of figures is that they are BIG! Not one of the samples sent to this reviewer was shorter than 32-33mm measured bottom of feet to top of head (not headgear or hair). They even look tall next to Essex's and Britannia's "tall" 25's, and they are a head taller than Peter's previous Sudan efforts done for Hinchliffe. I

Ignoring their size, these figures are by far Mr. Gilder's best efforts yet in Colonials (remembering his previous work for Hinchliffe). Anatomy is good, detail good and casting crispness adequate. Poses include the usual "stock" choices plus some rather exciting action pieces, most notably among the natives. The British include a number of officers in various poses, a war correspondent "scanning the horizon" through binoculars and even a Victorian Lady in period dress. Equipment to date consists of a Naval Brigade Gardner gun and a Royal Artillery Screw Gun. Both include the gun

These figures will work well as a "stand alone" gaming era or will fit in with any of the older 30mm lines such as Suren, Tradition and Scruby. They are not really compatible with many 25's except possibly the previously mentioned Essex and Britannia figures.

Connoisseur Figures are available in the U.S. from Keith Leidy, 2625 Forest Glen Trail, Riverwoods, IL 60016.
