25mm Landsknects and Swiss

Reviewed by Terry Gore

I recently received from The Foundry several of their new range of Landsknechts and Swiss castings. These figures have been sculpted by the Perry twins and as such, are of the high standard expected from the company.

The first casting is of a 'demi-cannon' (RENMERC GUN 2) and crew (RENMERC ART 1). the artillery piece has to be the finest casting of ordnance I have yet seen. It is 90mm (3 1/2") from the front of the barrel to the end of the trail and has an incredible amount of detail - rivets, metal-binding, woodgrain, etc. The crew are likewise superbly done. fully seven figures were sent, each in a different pose, with various intruments used in the maintenance of the artillery piece.

The figures stand 28M, Barrett scale, and are nicely proportioned as well as being well animated in both facial expression and pose. They are clothed in loose-fitting blouse, pantallons, stockings and the elaborate hats so well shown in contemporary artwork of the Renaissance period. Several of the figures sport quite prominent codpieces...no further comment here! There are enough figures here to man two pieces of artillery.

Three cavalry figures with horses were also sent (RENMERC 30x, 31x and 32x). These are 16th century gendarmes. One of the figures, 32x, sits astride a heavily armored destrier, trotting slowly toward the enemy with lance held at the ready. The gendarme figures are all fully armored, with sealed visor and elaborate plumage. Unlike other manufacturers' figures I have seen for this period, the horses and riders are perfectly proportioned to each other. This line is highly recommended.
