Age of Sail

Book Pair

Reviewed by Dick Bryant

Combined Books, Inc. has made available two books that will be of interest. They are "A Voice from The Main Deck" by Samuel Leech and "Reminiscences of A Naval Officer" by Captain A. Crawford, RN. The first was originally printed in 1857, the latter in 1851. Mr. Leech describes his life in the navies, both British and American as a ships boy and as crewman during the Napoleonic wars – he was on the Macedonian when it fought the USS United States! Captain Crawford tells his tale from the viewpoint of an officer in the same British navy during the same period.

The same period – the same navy yet worlds apart. These two books are a real eye-opener to those of us who thought they new that era through the reading of such novels as Hornblower, and the writings of Patrick O'Brien and Dudley Pope. The books are published by Chatham Publishing as part of a series, Sailors' Tales in which there are several books of similar interest. Available from Combined Publishing, PO Box 307, Conshohocken PA 19428 for $18.95 ea. In paperback. – Recommended for Age-of-Sail buffs
