HARD LESSONS is a soft cover book of 197 pages that includes a reprint of a collection of U.S. Navy after-action reports covering the pacific campaign for Feb. 42 -1943. A second section sets the reports in context and notes certain recurring themes. The 3rd section is a selection of previously unpublished photos of that war from a veteran's private collection. The reports were originally classified secret and notes forces involved, action reports, damage summary and notes on lessons learned. The reports were written soon after the action and therefore do not have the advantage of hindsight and Japanese sources that we have today. Therein lies their value- they show how the fog of war actually clouds the information that the commanders have to react to. Very interesting read. $19.95 + $6 P&H from Scale Specialties, PO Box 1117, Fullerton CA, 92632-1117 - GERRY LANE Other Reviews
