The Air Campaign

Book

reviewed by Bill Rutherford

By Col. J.A. Warden III, AFA/Pergamon-Brassey IDP, NYC, NY; 161 pgs., $18.95, HB.

Col. Warden writes about air warfare at the operational level and the link between winning the war in the air and winning the war on the ground. This is not a gaming book, but is a text for practicing air warriors. The Air Campaign does not get into petty tactics at the level of specific combats. Rather, it describes the grand tactics of a theater-level air campaign.

Successive chapters deal with the concept of air superiority, offensive and defensive operations, when to engage in each, interdiction, close air support, and winds up with two chapters tying the various types of operations into a coherent campaign. You might read any of a number of books on specific mission and combat details. You'll read this one to figure out how to win your campaign game. Recommended for students of air warfare and to air gamers.
