Carribean Smackdown:
Inn of the Angry Iguana

by Russ Lockwood

You may know Matt Fritz from his other work, but man o man, I finally got to see an Inn of the Angry Iguana scenario in action. I've read about it and I can say the thing is just as impressive in person as it is in print. What mayhem. It's got pirates, treasure, soldiers, bar staff, critters, dueling, and a special picture of an Iguana in a pirate hat. And its angry because someone, well, everyone, seems out to steal the treasure.

Using a three-deck card system that keeps things hopping, each faction vies to grab the treasure of the bar. I'm not sure what skirmish system he uses, probably scratchbuilt like the bar, but he had fathers and sons involved in the game I saw until the very end. And Matt even handed out the treasure at the end--chocolate coins.

Each figure in a faction has a number of attributes and a save roll. Players use a d20 for fighting and d6s for damage. The coolest thing is that the neat and tidy bar, with its tables and benches, becomes an absolute mess as the game progresses. Benches overturn, beer spills onto the floor and creates a hazard, potted plants overturn to create obstacles, and so on. And somewhere, somebody jumps out the windows. Way cool. But then again, I like pirate movies.
