Essex

25mm and 15mm Napoleonics

by Jim Arnold

England's Essex Miniatures are available in both 25mm and 15mm. Readers may recall that I was very impressed with the fine detail of the 25mms and that they were largish figures. Nothing has changed with the release of more British early Peninsula figures. The prominent detail, clean lines, and outstanding facial animation continue. From the well-carved nose to the folds and tears on the trousers these figures just cry out for a top notch paint job. A complete army of these figures would look magnificent; a small skirmish force would be elegant. it's a pity they are simply too large to mix in with other lines with the exception of Peter Gilder's 25mms. Now available are line infantry in the stovetop shako riflemen, highlanders, and wonderful hussar and dragoon figures. The horses were available for my inspection.

On the 15mm side are some nice French in greatcoats including an elite grognard, weary looking with bicorne and drooping mustache. A British infantry command group from the 1814-15 period shows very nice detail but is posed a bit stiffly. A kneeling highlander looks quite good with the same prominent detail of his larger cousins, although he carries a musket that looks a bit oversized. Overall, the 15mms range from average to very nice and are quite suitable for mixing in with other 15mm figures. The 15mm figures are $2.33 for 8 infantry, or 6 command, or 4 cavalry, or 3 mounted. Available from Wargames, Box 278, Route 40 East, Triadelphia, WV 26059.
