Essex Miniatures

15mm WWII Infantry

Reviewed by Bill Rutherford

Unbeknownst to many, Essex makes a nice range of WW II German, British, and American troops, including some 24 packs of early and late war Germans, 18 packs of early and late war British, and 13 packs of post D-Day Americans. The figures rated consistently at the heavy side of 15.5M Barret. The review samples all wear full field gear, with backpacks, water bottles, entrenching tools, etc. Poses, figure proportions, and detailing are all typical Essex. The figures generally are just a little squat but this is due at least in part to the wealth of detail in the figures themselves and in their equipment. The faces are some of the best in the business. Poses are generally restrained, almost stodgy, but they paint up well and look convincing once painted. Weapon detailing is quite good, especially the heavy weapons and the American M1 carbines. The prone figures are among the nicer that I've seen; the PIAT gunner is a good example, with a case of PIAT projectiles on the ground beside him. At $3.29 per pack of 8 infantry (or 6 weapons crew), these are some of the more expensive figures on the market, but given their quality, I consider them a good deal. Recommended and available from your FLGS. If you can't get them there, contact the importer, Wargames, of Box 278, route 40 East, Triadelphia, WV 26059-0278, or email them at shood@ict.org.
