Cavalry: Austrian Chevaulegers (1803-14)

by David L. Arneson

In 1792 there were six regiments of Chevaulegers in the Austrian Army and these units served throughout the Napoleonic Wars. In organization they were identical to the other Light Cavalry Regiments and, as with the other, were reduced from ten squadrons to eight after the military disasters of 1805. Prior to 1803 there is little in the way of uniform information for these troops, but it would seem that their costume was not to dissimilar from that which they wore in 1803-1815. Since exact confirmation is lacking on this, however, the information must be regarded as accurate only for the period 1803-1815.
