Austrian and Hungarian Grenadiers

by David L. Arneson

AUSTRIAN GRENADIERS

Each regiment of the Austrian Army had two companies of Grenadiers attached to it for administrative purposes. In all cases these Regimental Grenadiers were formed into reserve Grenadier formations of six companies each while still retaining their Regimental uniform colors. There were no selperate Grenadier Regiments until after the wars were completed, but for all practical purposes the "Reserve and Grenadier" units were permanent standing formations.

Only the line regiments of the Austrian Army had Grenadier companies, the Light units were 100 per cent Line Lights. The Grenadiers of the Austrian Army (as with most European Armies of the period) represent the strongest, bravest, best trained, best paid, best fed, and most experienced troops in the Army. They also have their own distinctive uniforms

The Regimental uniform colors for the Grenadiers is to be found on the Collars, Bag, Cuffs, Turnbacks, and the edges of the shoulder boards. All these areas are marked on the accompaning illustration. The remainder of the Uniform is the same for all Austrian Grenadier Uniforms with no variation from regiment to regiment.

HEADGEAR:

A black colored fur headpiece with black visor, Brass colored frontpiece, cockade on upper right edge with small (4-5") dark Green plume, and a bag in the Regimental colors hanging in the back.

TUNIC:

All white with Brass buttons (Nine of them) with Collar, Cuffs, Turnbacks, and edging on the shoulder boards in the Regimental colors.

PANTS:

All white with no distinguishing trim.

FOOTGEAR:

Dark Colored shoes with knee-high dark colored Gaiters, buttoned up the side with nine brass buttons.

EQUIPMENT:

Canteen of light grey metal with a broad white strap worn from upper right to lower left, Cartridge case (containing powder and shot) Dark brown or Black in color with a brass fastener in the shape of a bursting Gernade. A brown colored back-pack with white straps and fasteners. The bedroll is covered with dark fur and tied to the top of the knackpack with white straps. The last item of equipment is a sword bayonet with brass grip, a black scabbard with brass tip, and a black strap, with a white tassel on the sword hilt.

HUNGARIAN GRENADIERS

Each regiment of the Hungarian Army maintained two companies of grenadiers attached to it administratively and as with the Austrians, they were formed into six company reserve Battalions. These companies were composed of the same sort of personnel as the Austrians and had the same size companies (120 men).

Regimental colors are, as they were with the Austrians, located on the Collar, Cuffs, Turnbacks, bags, and edging on the shoulder boards. In fact the only difference between the two uniforms are the pants and the absence of gaiters.

PANTS:

All Blue with two Hungarian Knots located on the front.

FOOTGEAR:

There are no Gaiters, just the dark colored shoes.

NOTE: The Greatcoats for both Armies' Grenadiers is Dark Gray (almost Black). It goes on over the uniform (covering all the Regimental Colors) and is knee length. The Knap5ack, Canteen, Cartridge Box, and Sword all go on over the coat with their white straps contrasting sharply with the dark colored Greatcoat.
