AUSTRIAN AND HUNGARIAN LANDWEHR Prior to 1808 there was no widespread use of Landwehr nor did they exist prior to that date in any but the smallest numbers. In 1808 a large scale Landwehr organization was established on paper, and the following year saw vast numbers of them taking to the field in a variety of uniforms and organizations, only a few of which have come down to us today. On paper the Landwehr were supposed to have 800-1,000 men per Battalion with a total paper strength of over 200 Battalions of which less than 10 per cent saw any action. The standard uniform for these troops, such as they existed, was as follows: HEADGEAR: Identical to the Line Infantry. TUNIC AND PANTS: Field Gray in color with unit colors on Collar, Cuffs, Shoulderboard Edging, and Turnbacks. EQUIPMENT: As with the Austrian Line Infantry and Grenadiers. FOOTGEAR: Dark Brown or Black shoes with Dark Brown or Black knee-high Gaiters. TYROLEAN LANDWEHR UNIFORM HEADGEAR: Black in color, it has a Brass front-piece, and on the upper right side there is a Green plume fastened with a Yellow Cockade with a Black center. TUNIC, PANTS, FOOTGEAR, EQUIPMENT: As with Austrian and Hungarian Landwehr. SALZBURG LANDWEHR HEADGEAR: Light Brown in color with a small Green plume attached to it by the Yellow, with Black center, cockade. COAT: Dark Grey in color with Grey-Brown cuffs and Maroon collar. TROUSERS: Black in color with no trim. FOOTGEAR: Plain Black shoes with knee-high White stockings. EQUIPMENT: Canteen and cartridge box are both Black as are their straps.
