Austrian and Hungarian Line Infantry

by David L. Arneson

AUSTRIAN LINE INFANTRY

Of the many Regiments in the Austrian Army there were 48 Line Regiments which are referred to as German Regiments. These Regiments were recruited in Galicia, Moravia, and Bohemia as well as in the real German speaking areas of the country.

Each line Regiment in 1792 had twelve 6 lb Guns attached to them as Battalion guns (three with each Battalion). These guns were hand dragged around the battlefield, along with some ammunition, by Artillerymen assigned, along with the guns, to the Battalion.

The remainder of the Regiment was organized as follows by the Austrians: Three Field Battalions (1,092 men each) with 6 Companies per Battalion (182 men) and four "Zugs" per Company (42 men each) plus HQ Squad. There was also a 182 man Artillery Company assigned to the Regiment to operate the Battalion guns, but these troops wore Artillery Uniforms.
