Created 17 September 1803.
Disbanded 23 April 1814.
Reformed 8 April 1815.

The battalion of Marins was composed of one capitaine de vaisseau, one lieutenant de vaisseau adjutant, five capitanes de fregate, twenty-five lieutenants de vaisseau, twenty-five maitres, twenty-five contre-madtres, twenty-five quartiers-maitres, five trompettes, and 625 matelots. This total force of 737 men was divided into five "equipages", each of five "escoudes". An 6quipage consisted of a capitaine de fregate, five lieutenants de vaisseau, five maitres d'equipages, five contre-maitres, five quartier-maitres, one trompette and 125 matelots.

The battalion was increased in July 1804 to include a headquarters staff, five equipages and a depot 6quipage, making a total of 818 men. The battalion was virtually destroyed at the Battle of Bailen in July 1808 and was reduced in 1809 to a single 6quipage of 153 men. Reorganised into a headquarters and eight 6quipages, the Marins reached their peak in 1810 with a total of 1,144 men. When the Marins were reformed in 1815 they numbered just 150 officers and men.
