Grenadiers a Pied Grenadier a pied, campaign dress, 1807 On the formation of the Imperial Guard in 1804 the Grenadiers a Pied had a headquarters staff and two battalions of Grenadiers. Each Grenadier battalion consisted of eight companies. Each company comprised one capitaine, one lieutenant en premier, two lieutenants en seconde, one sergeant-major, three sergeants, one fourrier, eight brigadier-soldats, two sapeurs, two tambours; and 80 grenadiers, making 102 all ranks. The headquarters staff contained one colonel, one major, three chefs de bataillon, three adjutant-majors, three sous adjutant-majors, two porte-drapeaux, three chirurgiens, one tambour-major, three brigadier-tambours, and a regimental band with one band master and forty-six musicians. Grenadiers in full dress and fatigue dress, 1808. In 1806 the corps of Grenadiers contained two regiments each of two battalions. A battalion now consisted of eight companies of 122 men. The staff was also expanded and there was now three majors, six chefs de battaillon, six adjutant-majors and sous-adjutant-majors, four porte-drapeaux, six brigad ier-tamb ours, the whole being commanded by a colonel. The two regiments were amalgamated in 1808 to form just one regiment of two battalions. The re-formed 2nd Regiment and the 3rd and 4th regiments also had two battalions of eight companies each. Chasseurs a Pied 1st Regiment created 2 December 1799 as "infanterie
legere", becoming Chasseurs in 1801.
The Chasseurs evolved in much the same way as the Grenadiers and their composition was identical except that the band consisted of 35 musicians. Imperial Guard Infantry
