[15] I am not clear on the Prussian reference to ‘Polish’ Lancers from whom they claim to have captured a standard. These could be a regiment of Polish Lancers that left the garrison of Vitry on the morning of the 1st Feb. These were 300 strong and had been raised by General Pac from the remains of the Polish troops who had stayed loyal to the French after Leipzig. However, Weil records that after leaving Vitry they headed towards Brienne to join Napoleon, which would have taken them away from Macdonald’s troops. Instead, they could be referring to the French 6th Chevauléger Lanciers of the Provisional Light Regiment and just submitting to a tendency to call all lancers ‘Polish’?!
