March to 27 April 1838: Negri's Expedition March 1838. Count Negri Carlist Expedition.( 9 Castillian Bns + 4 Sqdns + 2 guns. The Count of Negri led the last great Carlist expedition. Negri took Segovia, but his ill equiped expedition began to retreat. Apr 27 1838. Negri vs Espartero. Battle was fought in a down pour with powder too wet for use in the muskets or cannon. It gave an advantage to the lance armed cavalry. The Cristinos with a larger Cavalry force won. The Carlist foot formed square, but could not fire as its powder was soaked and the army surrendered en masse. Only Negri and the cavalry escaped. June 22 1838. PENACERRADA. Cristinos under Espartero defeated the main Carlist Army of the North under Guergue. The Carlist Húsares de Arlabán threw back some Cristino light infantry, and were endangering units of Guard infantry, when they were charged by the Húsares de la Princesa. ThePrincesa Hussars won and continued to advance defeating a squadron of Carlist lancers, take 300 prisoners, 4 guns, and rout the enemy army. This battle lead to the fall of the nearby Carlist town of Peñacerrada. July-Aug 1838. Second Siege of Morella. The Cristinos under Oráa (22 battalions + 25 guns but 5 were larger than 8 pdrs) to take Morella. . During the siege the castle and town were lightly garrisoned while most of the army under Cabrera attacked and broke the siege from the rear. Oct 1 1838: Battle of MAELLA. Cabrera's Army of the Centre inflicted a serious defeat on the Cristinos under Oráa. The Cristino force was a veteran force called "El Ramillete" (the picked ones), (11th Line 'Córdoba' /3 Bns + 7th Line 'Africa'/2 Bns + two squadrons of the 1st Line Cavalry/2 Sqdns +6th Light Cavalry/1 Sqdns). Cabrera force included his elite troops as well 1st and 2nd Tortosa battalions + 1st and 2nd Mora battalions + Guías de Aragón + the Lanceros de Tortosa Sqdrn + 1st Lanceros de Aragón Sqdn + Ordenanzas Sqdn. The Carlists claimed they were out numbered. . The Cristinos lost with only a thousand escaping. Dec 4 1838. CARASCAL. A massive Cavalry battle which pitted the reformed and freshly mounted Carlist Cavalry vs the Cristinos escort of a major supply convoy. This Cristinos victory shattered the remaining cavalry force under Carlist command. Carlist Cavalry = 12 Sqdns. Cristinos Cavalry = 9 Sqdns; 4 of 2nd Light Cavalry Rgt + 4 of Bourbon Lancer Rgt + British Aux Legion Sqdn (180). Their skirmishers were ahead of the main body of lancers, and the Cristino regiments drew up to face the Carlists. Cristino force withdrew leaving the 180 British. The British feigned a withdrawal and then turned, counterattacked and destroyed all but two of the enemy squadrons. Dec 1838: Second Battle of LOS ARCOS (Aka SESMA). Cristino under Diego Leon defeats Maroto's Carlist cavalry.
