Jan 2-3 1835. Battle of SEGURA. Zumalacárregui, in order to halt a Cristino offensive, decided that his army would have to suffer heavy losses. When attacking the enemy columns on the march, the Carlists delivered a rolling fire and then a fire by platoons - which surprised an English observer by its regularity and order. At a later period in the battle the 1st Navarrese and Guías de Navarra "opened left and right" to allow the general's squadron of escorting cavalry to charge through at the gallop, a very considerable feat of drill. Unfortunately, the Príncipe regiment (3rd line), drawn up three deep, halted them with its fire. Jan ? 1835. Battle of ORBISO. Carlist under Zumalacárregui defeat a Cristinos probing force. Feb 25 1835. Skirmish at CERVERA. The Cristinos Regiment of Ceuta, suffers a serious defeat. March 1835. Pamplona Offensive. A Cristino attack launched by Mina into Carlist Navarra. The poorly supplied force was blocked, surrounded and forced to conduct a fighting withdrawal back to their main supply base. May ? 1835. Battle of Guernica. Carlist under Zumalacárregui defeats Cristinos under Valdés at Guernica. Carlist forces subsequently occupy Villafranca, Vergara, Tolosa and Estella. Summer 1835. Carlist troops under Cabrera begins operations against Cristinos troops under General Nogueras in lower Aragon. June ? 1835. Battle of OCHANDIANO. Three Carlist Battalions (Zumalacárregui) defeat a Cristinos force with the capture 380 Cristinos . June 1835. Siege of BILBAO. Carlist forces under Carlos and Zumalacarregui attack the fortified city of Bilbao. The Cristinos garrison (5000 men + 30 guns) repel every attempt to assult its walls. The Carlist forces are not only defeated but Zumalacarregui their best General is killed. The siege demonstrates the severe Carlist weakness in artillery and enginnering assets. Jun-July 1835. SENAHUGA. The French Foreign Legion is the main garrison troops which withstand a four day siege by Carlist troops. July 16 1835. MENDIGORRIA. The Cristino Army under Cordova defeats the Carlist Army of the North under Moreno. August 1835. French Foreign Legion skirmish against Carlists in Catalonia and Aragon. August 1835. The Carlist Brigadier Guergué advances into Aragon with 2,500 Infantry, 100 cavalry and 2 guns. The then proceeds to Catalonia to rally support. August 30 1835. Action at HERNANI. The British legion (4 Bns) with Cristinos (4 bns) support under De Lacy Evans attacks Hernani. Carlist forces were split, with five battalions before San Sebastián, five before Bilbao, and another five at Hernani under General Gómez. Evans lead eight battalions against the Carlists. Gómez successfully defended his position. Sep 11 1835. Action at ORDUNA. 9,000 Cristinos under Espeleta and Espartero advance from Bilbao toward the Carlist base at Orduña. Mirasol with 3,000 men including the British Legion under Evans (6 Bns) cover the Cristino left flank. They found the main bridges and passes strongly defended. Espeleta withdraws Mirasol's covering force, then orders the withdrawal of the main body. The now exposed division under Espartero are routed. This action by Cristinos if successful could have destroyed the demoralized Carlist army. Oct 29-Nov 7 1835. British Legion moves to Vitoria a distance of nearly 240 km skirting the enemy held areas, going via Portugalette, Castro, Limpias, Frias, Briviesca and Miranda de Ebro. Nov-Dec 1835. After a three-week rest, De Lacy Evans takes the legion to Vitoria, covering a move by Córdova toward Aragon.
