of the First Carlist War

1833-1834

This period involved numerous skirmishes between Carlist irregulars and Cristions convoys and small outposts. The Carlist won many of these small encounters.

Nov or Dec 1833. First Battle of LOS ARCOS. First battle of war. Carlist volunteers under Guevara move from Logroño into Navarre. Cristino forces defeat the Carlists and Guevara is executed.

Nov-Dec 1833?. Merino Expedition. 11,000 Carlists irregulars under Merino advances south from Logroño towards Madrid. He is forced to withdraw to Navarre after meeting large formations of Cristinos troops. Several skirmishes occur during the operation.

Dec ? 1833. Battle of ASTARTA. New Carlist CnC Zumalacárregui defeats two Cristino commanders, Oráa and Lorenzo. Most of the 350 KIA are Cristinos.

1833 Nov-Dec. Siege of Eibar. Eibar was defended mainly by Cristinos militia. Without heavy guns, the Carlist failed to capture the city.

May 2 1834. Battle of ALASUA. Carlist under Zumalacárregui defeats the Cristino under Quesada as he marches from Salvatierra into Navarre. Another Cristino force under Jáuregui arrives to save part of the defeated command. many Cristino POWs are executed.

August 1834. VIANA. Zumalacárregui's 200 Carlist lancers then met and broke the veteran Cazadores de la Guardia Real. The lancers went on to overwhelm a battalion of the 19th Line 'Castilla' Regiment.

October 27-28, 1834. Battle of SALVATIERRA (AKA ALEGRIA). Fought on the plains of Salvatierra near Vitoria. Four Carlist battalions with cavalry flank support under Zumalacárregui defeat 3,500 Cristinos under General O'Doyle.
