Life & Letters of Wallenstein from the Quarterly Review of 1838

A very useful article masquerading as a review on Friedrich Forster's collection of Wallenstein's letters and Lt Colonel Mitchell's "The Life of Wallenstein". Wallenstein appears as a good deal less greedy than he is usually painted and the author avoids the usual partisan history which we (possibly mistakenly) expect from this era.

The Foreign Element in The British Army 1793-1815. C.T.Atkinson lecture to the RUSI Very interesting monograph (with questions from the floor) on the foreign regiments in the Army, the King's German Legion is not covered so one is left with obscure units of Swiss, Albanians, Italian and French emigrés. There is some wonderful stuff in this.

Princes of the House of Condé: The Edinburgh Review of 1886 et seq These pamphlets cover the long review of the Duc d'Aumale's history of his cousins. Volumes 3 and IV dealing with The Great Condé while still Duc d'Enghien and his rather grotty father. Reviews in those days were not a matter of giving an opinion, but of presenting something close to a summary of the story so far. As a result one gets some very useful information that would otherwise reside under two problems: being in very old books, and in French.
