Ian W. Walker for Alan Sutton This is a useful and well-informed history of Harold that is also well written. Its weak-spot (as is common in this era) is that the author must guess what it likely in the circumstances. As these circumstances can change from the question of personal relationships to the likelihood of the eaorls believing one thing over another they are very dependent on the author's judgement. I found myself unpersuaded by some of this, but Walker's method is solid and he is open in his views. There are some very useful maps of the Earldoms. More Old Duffer's Book Corner (book reviews)
