John Stoye for Birlinn (reprint of his 1964 book) John Stoye has a vast amount of knowledge about the 17th Century (I believe he wrote one of the Fontana series) and he deploys it well here. The practical matters of raising armies under a number of systems are clearly handled. The Austrians seeking to raise forces themselves and via diplomacy with the German Princes, and the Ottomans via their own forces and those of their vassals the hospodars and the Crim Tartars (who had to be started off early to get to the theatre of war). The close nature of the combat and the manoeuvre possibilities of combat of the period are clearly shown and there are even enough maps (though the actual battle could have done with one). Stoye even knows which regiments were where in the campaign. Good stuff. More Old Duffer's Book Corner (book reviews)
