Reviews by "Old Duffer"
Chatham Publishing Another in the Chatham series where the range of naval combat in the subject period is handled by a series of short, well illustrated, essays. This is not Sir Julian Corbett detail but offers a lot to those who want to be swiftly "briefed up" on a topic. The three major sections consider the Blockade of Europe, the exploitation of seapower overseas and finally, its exploitation in Europe. The Blockade section covers not only some of the major actions, but the experiences of the many smaller vessels (cutters and luggers for example). The sortie of the Brest fleet in 1809, the blockade of Toulon, its all here. There is also a rather neat story about Napoleon's direct experience of seapower off Boulogne. In the Overseas section we visit South Africa and South America. We see the French (and Dutch) hold on the East and West Indies weakened. We cruise off Reunion and Tamatave and sail with the HEIC fleet. In Europe there is the invasion of Denmark, the Baltic campaigns, and the Dutch raiders. The poor show at Walcheren is examined compared to the better performance in the Med. For a period of astonishing exotica this book is a fitting presentation. One has occasionally to remind oneself that all these British victories were caused by a French guerre de course campaign that required the deployment of the whole fleet. Trafalgar merely began the process. Ripping yarns indeed. More Old Duffer's Book Corner (book reviews)
