Reviews by "Old Duffer"
Gervase Phillips for Boydell This is a splendid book. Its major topic is dealt with in great detail without becoming over heavy. Phillips dwells not only on the three major battles (Flodden, Solway Moss, and Pinkie) but on the campaigns and border fights. The issues confronting both sides are clearly detailed, the narrative is (accordingly) more clearly understood. But as if this were not enough his opening chapters dealing with the Military Revolution are some of the best I have read on this vexed topic. Working through a number of the supposed revolutions Phillips demonstrates their basis in medieval practice and the nature of their evolution (rather than revolution). Those who still believe the Protestant Hero's army to be materially different from any others should read this book. More Old Duffer's Book Corner (book reviews)
