Reviews by "Old Duffer"
Stephen Roskill reprinted by Wordsworth Roskill was involved in writing the Official History but this is his more populist history of the Royal Navy in the Second World War. This is a great story of staggering bravery and endurance on all sides. We go through the U-boat battles, the clashes in the Med, the Artic, the Atlantic and the Pacific. Roskill is recognisably one of the Band of Brothers that were so parodied by Beyond The Fringe, but at this remove the story has a very great immediacy. We only got away with it by the skin of our teeth. A good pacey read that is accessible to the layman, and a real bargain at the price. Makes one return to War At Sea determined to do better.
