Reviews by "Old Duffer"
Richard Harding for UCL. This is another excellent book from UCL. This is quite one of the handiest summaries of this period I have read. Nary a taff-rail or studdsail in sight as we deal with real naval history. The question is whether one can maintain a battle-fleet in the Caribbean, or outfit ships at Brest rather than the minutiae of tactics. Harding operates chronologically as the first battlefeets appear in the Dutch wars. We move through the wars of Louis XIV with the Maritime Powers establishing themselves. Then into the Austrian War with its even results and the Seven Years War with the very opposite. The American War sees a last ditch attempt to unseat the Royal Navy. The Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, for all their danger, being less worrisome for the British. Very good analysis indeed and strongly recommended. More Old Duffer's Book Corner (book reviews)
