A Tribute to John R. Elting

Introduction

After a short illness, Colonel John R. Elting passed away suddenly, seated at his desk in his study, on Thursday 25 May. Elting was the author, co-author or editor of sixteen books; several of those noted in the tributes below are considered classics.

John Robert Elting was a soldier in the United States Army for 35 years. His service included combat with the 8th Armored Division in World War II and teaching at the Military Academy, West Point. Elting was a self-taught historian and the subject of a fascinating and sometimes humorous interview which appeared in Napoleon #10.

John and Ann Elting would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary later this year. His death at the age of 89 was a shock to the Napoleonic community. The outpouring of accolades, which we received at the news, prompted us to prepare this tribute to a truly knowledgeable, gifted and beloved man.
