Author of Napoleon's Last Victory and the Emergence of Modern War. "John Elting was certainly a giant in the field. His greatest contribution was in the original West Point Atlas of the Napoleonic Wars. His Swords Around a Throne along with his other works will last as part of the canon of Napoleonic studies. There are very few authors whose books stand the test of time. What distinguished John's work was his thoroughness as a scholar combined with a great command of the language and fluid prose. The combination of research and readability is not found in many history books. He was both an excellent historian and writer. "In addition, he was intellectually stimulating. We conducted a long-range debate by mail over sources concerning Napoleon's Last Victory. Basically it was over whose sources were correct. I'd call the debate a draw, but his willingness at his age to engage in such a debate via letter is a rare thing these days--it gives zest to scholarship. He was firmly dedicated to the truth as a historian and certainly challenged the younger generation of scholars. He was a real gentleman of the old school. If there is a hereafter, I'm sure he is standing with the Emperor and the Old Guard." More Elting Tribute
