A Tribute to John R. Elting

Calvin Hurd

Uniformologist and staff member

"Colonel Elting was a true gentleman and scholar and always kind and helpful to those who had anything to do with him. I had a friend, Al Thompson, who visited West Point in the 1950's while Colonel Elting was (I believe) director of the museum there. Al was a collector of Civil War figures, disabled from the waist down because of wounds from a Japanese grenade in WW II. When he visited the West Point museum Colonel Elting allowed him access to all the Civil War data and exhibits and gave him the VIP treatment, even having Al to dinner at his home. The visit was one of the high points in Al's life one he constantly spoke of until his death a few years later. Colonel Elting will be sorely missed by all who had any contact with him."
