Aberdeen Proving Grounds

German Jagdtiger

By Robert Runnels

Armament: 128mm main gun and a hull-mounted machine gun

Speed: 21.5 mph

The Jagdtiger had the most powerful gun and thickest frontal armor of any AFV to be mass-produced in WWII. Too slow though, more like a mobile pillbox! 70 of these vehicles were produced at the Niebelungwerk at St Valentin, despite the fury of Allied bombing.

Otto Carius, a famed panzer ace, finished the war in command of a company of these vehicles from the 512th Jagdpanzer Battalion. This unit surrendered to the Americans in the Ruhr pocket.
