I was fortunate enough to visit the Aberdeen Proving Grounds well before the terrorist attack at the World Trade Center. Since that time, the Proving Grounds no longer allow unlimited civilian access because the tank park and museum are on an active military base. Last I knew, they were only letting small groups in and they had to be escorted while they were on the base. At the time of my visit, there was talk that the museum would finally begin to restore the tanks, paint them in proper colors and apply suitable markings. The plan is also to put the entire tank park indoors to minimize mother nature's detrimental corrosive effects! The museum has artillery pieces, infantry small arms and TANKS!!! It is truly awe-inspiring to walk right up to these mechanical beasts! However, be careful if it has rained recently. These pictures were taken in April. It was still cold out and it had rained heavily the night before. I sank up to my knees in some muck when I walked in between the cement slabs that support the weight of each of the tanks! This article will contain only a handful of the pictures I took, so there should be more articles to come! This article will focus on tank destroyers and self-propelled gunswithout turrets.
