Table 2: 1939 German Divisions:
Authorized Organizations

By Rick Gayler

Notes

Authorized organizations are for standard divisions, some actual divisions (particularly mechanized ones) diverged from the standard in varying details.

Inf- Infantry; Mtn: Mountain; Mot. Motorized; Art. Artillery; Recon: Reconnaissance; Eng: Engineer. Div. Division; Rgt. Regiment; Btl. Battalion.

"Rgt x Btl" lists the number of regiments in the division and how many battalions are in each regiment. Thus, "U3" for infantry regiments and battalions of a 1st-Wave division means the division had three infantry regiments, each with three infantry battalions. A listing of "Oxl" means the division had no regimental headquarters but did have one battalion of the indicated type.

Recon battalions in mechanized divisions (motorized infantry, panzer, light) were motorized, containing armored cars and motorcyclists. Those of other divisions were at best partially motorized, relying more on cavalry and bicyclists.

The rifle regiment of a panzer division was in effect a motorized infantry regiment, although with a different designation: "rifle" ("Schutzen") as opposed to "motorized infantry" ("Infanterie (motorisiert)"). A motorized infantry regiment was indeed an infantry regiment that had been motorized, with just minor equipment changes. A rifle regiment was different. For a panzer division, two of the regiment's battalions were rifle battalions, similar but not identical to infantry battalions and the third battalion was a motorcycle battalion. For a light division, the regiment was called a "cavalry rifle" regiment-reflecting its origins as a cavalry regiment, although it no longer contained horses. All three of its battalions were "cavalry rifle" battalions.
