This is a very ambitious setof rules, written in 1975, that attempts to address WWI trench fighting at both the 1:1 "Raid" figure ratio and the 1:40 "Divisional" figure ratio. These rules do, in fact, address most of the basic facets of trench warfare - artillery, trenches, gas, obstacles, etc. - but do so in a basic, but not necessarily simple, manner. The divisional game addresses at length preplanned indirect fires and orders. Tactical command control is not addressed at all. Movement of units is relatively standard fixed movement rates, penalties for crossing certain types of terrain, etc. Fire and melee combat is based on a unit's attack factor, which is derived from the unit's strength. Casualties are calculated from this factor and are predetermined, being calculated on a (supplied) pinwheel combat results calculator- there are no random factors to add variance. The morale rules governing unit reaction (and individual reaction in the raid game) are straightforward and are based on a modified die roll. There are extensive rules for tank combat, but the combat procedure itself is somewhat simplistic. Armor thicknesses are given for the vehicles used in the game but don't appear to be used for anything, antitank combat being handled by die rolls unrelated to any defensive armor. The raid game plays in a similar manner except that there is some die-roll induced variance in fire and melee casualties. All in all, these rules are somewhat dated in their mechanics and take more effort to play than they're worth. Reviewing Stand
